The talk will encompass a 360-degree tour of making of terracotta in India from different techniques of making and firing of the works, rituals / functions involved behind making those. Certain factors are pan Indian but there are varieties in making or firing techniques from region to region. An audience will be taken on a journey of narratives on the varied belief systems, rituals, and religious practices behind Indian terracotta both mundane and sacred from different parts of the country.
Ms. Mukherjee is an art educator and teaching as guest faculty in many art and design colleges in India. She coordinates ceramic workshops that were held in Canada, USA and Singapore. She had her last solo show in BC, Canada in early 2020. Presently her works are on display at the British Council, Delhi as a part of a group show. Her works are in many private collections including FuLe International Ceramic Art Museum, China.
She is a Fulbright scholar in ceramics. She is an awardee of both Junior and Senior fellowships by Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India.

Terracotta was traditionally seen as a revered material as it combines air, earth, water, and fire which constitute four out of the five vital life elements. The talks will analyze ‘Terracotta’ from the historical, architectural, and regional perspectives. The modern adaptation of Terracotta will also be explored. In the current landscape of deteriorating living conditions due to climate change, it is increasingly important for us to adapt new tools and technologies towards developing appropriate architectural responses. While the development of computational design tools has facilitated the development of geometrically complex building skins, they remain to a large extent an aesthetic expression of form. Our need of the hour is to develop smarter facades that are also performative from an environmental perspective and at this intersection of digital and sustainable lies the potential for an environmentally informed technology as a way forward in design practices.
The speaker will present his work with Terracotta in his practice and will be touching upon his explorations ranging from art installations & biomimicry to performance driven building facades.
Monish Siripurapu is a TEDx speaker and teaches as a visiting faculty at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. He presented his work at the TMK knowledge forum part of G20 summit at Bali, Science Museum London, Google’s Anthropocene, UCL Bartlett, CEDIM Mexico, IAAC Barcelona, Construction symposium Ekaterinburg in Russia etc. amongst others. His eco-friendly air-cooling solution, called the ‘CoolAnt’, won the Asia Pacific Low Carbon Footprint Challenge and it was funded by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
His works have been published across well renowned architectural journals and platforms, such as History Channel, CNN, World Economic Forum, Architectural Digest, ArchDaily, Inhabitant, among others.
He is the founder and Principal Architect of Ant Studio that has won the Clean Energy Challenge by What Design Can Do in 2019, Amsterdam and also received international recognition for their work in Nature inspired Biophilic Passive Cooling Building Envelopes.

Shri Bibek Debroy, an economist, scholar and author, is currently Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council of the Prime Minister and President, Indian Statistical Institute (ISI). He is Padma Shri awardee and has been conferred the title of ‘Vachaspati’ by Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha in 2018. He has made significant contributions to game theory, economic theory, income and social inequalities, poverty, law reforms, railway reforms and Indology among others.
He has translated the unabridged version of the Mahabharata into English, in a series of 10 volumes. He has also translated the Bhagavad Gita, the Harivamsa, the Vedas and Valmiki’s Ramayana (in three volumes). He has translated the Bhagavata Purana (in three volumes), the Markandeya Purana (one volume), the Brahma Purana (two volumes) and the Vishnu Purana (one volume).

The book digs into an array of treaties, made available in the book’s annexure, and traces the British takeover of India, state by state over a hundred-year period starting 1750. The book argues that this was achieved mainly by violating the treaties that they had signed with trusting allies who believed the British would abide by the agreements they had signed.
Discussants:
Dr Shashi Tharoor, a third-term Member of Parliament for Thiruvananthapuram, is the bestselling author of twenty-four books, both fiction and non-fiction, besides being a former Under Secretary, General of the United Nations and a former Minister of State for Human Resource Development and for External Affairs in the Government of India. He has won numerous awards, including the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, a Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the Crossword Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2019, Dr. Tharoor was also awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in the category of ‘English Non-Fiction’ for his book An Era of Darkness.
Dr Swapan Dasgupta is one of India’s most widely read political columnists for the past three decades. Having worked in almost all the leading publications in India in senior editorial positions, he has been an independent columnist since 2003. Dasgupta was educated at St Stephen’s College and received his doctorate from SOAS in 1980. He was subsequently a Research Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford. He was a member of the India-UK Round Table from 1998 to 2004. In 2015 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the President of India. He is a member of the National Executive of the BJP and was a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2016 to 2022.
The discussion will be moderated by Dr Sanjeev Chopra, IAS (retd), Former Director, Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie, and author of the book ‘We the People of the States of Bharat: The Making and Remaking of India’s Internal Boundaries’.
